The North Yorkshire Heritage Coast has numerous dramatic natural attractions of headlands, cliffs, bays and sandy beaches from Staithes, Runswick Bay, Sandsemd and Whitby to Scarborough.
The Yorkshire Heritage Coast is an absolute treasure chest and is visited by countless thousands of visitors every year. Extending from near Redcar, Marske and Saltburn to the north, it passes by many famous and picturesque communities including Staithes, Port Mulgrave, Runswick Bay and Sandsend before arriving at Whitby that is its heart. Continuing southwards can be found Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough. This coastline has the highest cliffs on the east coast of England and some fantastic headands, bays and sandy beaches which provide fantastic coastal scenery that will appeal to all visitors.
This coastline has so many famous associations, but the most important is that related to Captain James Cook, the famous circumnavigator of the globe, who learned his trade along this coastal stretch at Staithes and then Whitby. Museums and heritage centres exist along the coastal strip, or not far inland from it, including such as the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum at Marton, the Schoolroom Museum at Great Ayton, the Heritage Centre at Staithes and the Whitby Museum and the famous Captain Cook Memorial Museum, both in Whitby.
But this coastline has so much more of history and heritage to offer as it has a phenomenal maritime heritage, from fishing, the export of local produce and coastal trade, to the more romantic pastime of smuggling. In addition, this coastline is rich in fossil life and is a haven for fossil hunters who scour the cliffs and beaches for finds of various past life-forms from millions of years ago. And perhaps the most popular location for fossil hunters is Robin Hood's Bay itself.

Really enjoyed this hotel. We had a large suite overlooking the moors facing west and were very comfortable. Service and staff were very accommodating and the food at dinner and breakfast were more than satisfactory. Strongly recommended.
Just had three nights stay in August. Great location had a sea view paid a little extra. Well worth it. Beautifully clean, very comfy bed. Super breakfasts with plenty of variety served by very welcoming staff. Had dinner on our first night, great food superbly cooked and again very amiable staff. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Free car parking which is a bonus as area gets very busy. Will return.
"Dog friendly AND a great view!"
We visited 3 times during our long weekend staying at Robin Hoods Bay. Best views over the bay and plenty of tables outside of the sun is shining! Dogs welcome inside and out, just not in the most fancy bit!! Decent food at good prices- worth a visit.
"Absolutely wonderful in every way!"
This hotel is based at the top of the hill down to the beach, so fabulous locality. The food was absolutely second to none and they were more than willing to serve food which wasn't on the menu (for our awkward child). The room (room 4, family room) was very clean and very spacious. Our bathroom was beautiful and done to a high standard. But most of all, the staff were so friendly and helpful which absolutely made it for us. Thanks for a wonderful stay and we will definitely be back.
The hotel is ideally situated at the top of the cliff and has a lovely beer garden to cool off in with a drink and catch your breath after the climb back up the hill from the beach. Our room was a good size and clean and the best bit was the huge bathroom with separate shower and Cadburys advert bath. Lovely breakfast to set you up for the day and the bonus is having its own car park in an area where parking spaces are limited and in high demand. The staff were friendly and approachable too.
Difficult to find a fault"
Visited for the third time-professional but genuine welcome from staff who appeared to be happy in their work-all food of good quality from breakfast to dinner-restaurant capably supervised by Susie at breakfast and Michael at dinner-had room on second floor with views inland-could not find any fault.
This hotel is absolutely fantastic. Besides the fact that the rooms are amazing, the restaurant is fantastic, the coffee shop is great and the bar is fab. The staff are some of the most helpful and pleasant we have ever met.
Spent my 50th Birthday here and it was absolutely lovely. Cannot speak highly enough of this hotel. The staff are very friendly and professional, food is excellent and nothing was too much trouble. To top it off there is a beautiful view of Robin Hoods Bay, who could ask for more!
